These are some of my favorite links, or those that I’ve found useful for one reason or another
Writing Resources
Niteblade
Niteblade Fantasy and Horror Magazine is a killer magazine edited by moi. I’m very proud of it and could go on and on for several pages about it — but I’ll attempt to refrain and leave it at this. If you write check it out — it only pays a token amount but I hope the dollar value will continue to increase over time. If you don’t write but love to read, starting September 1st you’ll find top-quality stories and poetry there, all completely free.
NaNoLJers
This is a small and friendly writing group that I “run” on livejournal. During November we cheer each other on toward the finish line for NaNoWriMo and during the rest of the year we have weekly writing exercises, flash writing and occasional contests. Please, come join us
SFPoetry
I’m a member of the Science Fiction Poetry Association and if you write sci-fi or fantasy poetry you may want to consider it as well. As a member I get copies of Star*Line magazine and I get to nominate and vote for the Rhysling award — more importantly I’ve met loads of wonderful and talented people I wouldn’t have otherwise. Clicky clicky — you won’t regret it
FanStory
While I no longer keep a paid membership at FanStory, I did find them extremely useful in not only making new friends who just happen to write, but also in getting my work critiqued. I found that the contests are a bit like popularity contests, and many of the reviewers weren’t as picky as I’d have liked, but overall it is still a great site and one worth checking out.
NaNoWriMo
I love NaNoWriMo, but don’t ask me to explain why — sometimes I’m not even sure myself. It’s definately something that I honestly believe everyone, or at least every writer, ought to try at least once. If you join up let me know your username — we can be NaNo buddies!
Duotrope’s Digest
This is an awesome collection of writing markets — it might very well be even more extensive than Writer’s Market. Best of all, it’s free — but if you use it, you really ought to donate as a way of saying thank you. If you write with the intent to publish, you need to pop on over here.
Friends
Leslie Ann Moore
Leslie Ann is a phenomenal woman, and an exceptional writer. She’s helped me tremendously — before she started reviewing some of my stories on FanStory I didn’t even know what ‘passive voice’ meant. I can’t thank her enough for all the help and advice she’s given me. The first book of her trilogy ‘Griffin’s Daughter’ is in stores now, you should head over to her website and learn more about it.
BD Wilson
BD is a wonderfully talented woman I was lucky enough to meet through the Edmonton Writers Facebook group and I’m so glad I did. Not only does she give amazing critiques, she offers me just competition I sometimes need to get my own work done. Her website is well worth a visit — go on, clicky the linky, you know you want to
The Shine Journal
When I first sent my work in to The Shine Journal and Pamela accepted it for the second issue ever, my only regret was I hadn’t submitted sooner. Since then I’ve gotten to know Shine’s wonderful editor, Pamela, and continue to send work for her consideration on a regular basis. Whether you’re a reader or a writer, Shine has something for you.
As you may have guessed from the domain name, my name is Rhonda Parrish. I am a writer and this is my blog.
